Underwater robotics for the energy sector
Any offshore asset requires periodical maintenance during its lifetime. The Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair (IMR) industry today is already a multi-billion industry and is expected to grow significantly with aging assets. Increased offshore installation base together with offshore wind farms will drive the demand for IMR to grow exponentially in the coming years.

Kongsberg Ferrotech’s Nautilus robot is dedicated to subsea flowlines and can repair a wide range of pipeline defects, dents, external coating damages, internal and external corrosion, wall loss, pitting etc. By adjusting the repair process to the particular defect, the Nautilus robot applies a tailor-made repair for each individual defect. Nautilus’s unique habitat combined with a digital repair platform, ensure that all repairs are performed in a controlled environment and in a repeatable and fully documented manner.
“We have hundreds of thousands of miles of pipelines around the world and the Nautilus robot will be able to repair these pipelines in the most cost efficient and safe manner”
Phongsthorn Thavisin, former CEO at PTTEP

As all offshore structures, offshore wind turbines will be exposed to marine growth, coating damages, corrosion in the splash zone and material fatigue. Repair of these structures must be done on location. Kongsberg Ferrotech’s unique robotics enables continuous inspection, maintenance, and repairs of these structures, both above and below the waterline.

In 2019, close to 9 TWh of energy production was los due to subsea cable failures. Such failures are expected to grow in line with the growth of offshore wind farms. Kongsberg Ferrotech offer a range of services for preventive maintenance, to stop latent defects to develop into catastrophic defects. Initially, these services will be focusing on external interventions such as restoring external sheath, bend restrictions etc. Going forward, the Nautilus underwater habitat and internal mechanism is the ideal platform for delivering advanced methods to repair cable internal defects.
Kongsberg Ferrotech offers advanced robotic solutions for maintenance and permanent vessel hull repairs, maximizing operational availability by reducing the need for dry-docking and opens the possibility for battle damage assessment and repairs at sea.
Our remotely controlled robots deliver state of the art in-situ inspections, cleaning, machining, coating and metallic 3D-printing capabilities – for floating assets, without the need of diver support, all in a single operation.
